Match Report Early morning rains at Richmond resulted in a delayed start but RICC boys got their act together and dried the ground pretty impressively. Still the moist environment made DCC to opt for bowling after winning the toss. Match finally started at noon.
Niranjan and Mahesh were on the money from ball 1. Although Saket tried to get going early for RICC, he was promptly sent back by Niranjan off a leading edge that could be heard a mile away. Next Mahesh got a straight one that Srikanth received on his pads in front of the stumps. Then Ammar gave a practice catch of the bowling of Mahesh and RICC was in trouble at 11/3 in 5 overs. The 2 veteran bowlers pinned the home team with great pitching. Imran, then, played across the line of Rahul's bowling only to miss the ball to be trapped LBW. Then, Khadar and Anand put on some impressive resistance and decided to anchor the innings.
Hari and Deepesh then dominated the scene in bowling. A runout of a dropped catch terminated Khadar's day. RICC was struggling at 45/5 in 13 overs. Deepesh and Hari continued to bowl their hearts out and choked the run flow. Deepesh easily impressed everyone as the most economical bowler of the day. Hari was also spectacular and was as effective in applying the same pressure from the other end. Rahul provided a good base for sometime but Qaiser sent a few of his balls to the boundary. The latter played well but momentarily lost his concentration and Deepesh straightened a shooter to jam the batsman out in front. It looked like DCC had an upper hand but RICC's late middle order batsmen, Ganga and Moiz waited and refused to give up. They just dragged the game and scored runs methodically. Then, they timed the slog to perfection and runs were now free flowing. One notable incident was when Niranjan took a beautiful head high running catch at long off but signalled he had crossed the line for a 6. Last 7 overs resulted in 71 runs and RICC didnt lose a single wicket. Ganga was just a run shy of his well deserved 50 when the innings ended at a decent total of 160/7 in 30 overs.
DCC regrouped and discussed what they had to do. A long 30 minute lunch break was ironic as DCC, anyway, didnt get to eat although it was 3 pm already. They changed the focus instead to the score on hand which was neither an easy one nor difficult.
Ivan and Raj opened the batting and in no time the trend was set. Saket opened the bowling for RICC but Ivan welcomed him with a towering six and a cracking four in the first over. Raj was no different at the other end. He spanked some glorious shots rightaway off Murali's bowling. The 2 bats were piling runs in no time. Then, Ivan got over-excited and swung at a good ball from Saket to be out caught behind. Enters new swing man, and debutant, Sanjeewa. The wicket-keeper bat showed glorious foot work and drove the ball with immaculate timing. RICC bowlers tried every option: Linga, Anand and Ganga did their best but had no answers to the spectacular batting display put on by Raj and Sanjeewa. The batsmen just didnt throw their bats but yet worked aggressively and valued their wicket by making all kind of runs from singles to maximum. DCC pavillion were now singing songs. In the field, however, only 2 players were having fun. A century partnership by the pair also saw Raj's maiden 50 in MACC after .... just 6 years. Sanjeewa decided he didnt want to wait that long, so he made his 50 in his first ever MACC match. With just a handful of runs left, Raj finally got out to a good catch by Murali off Srikanth. Pratik made a quickfire 12 to help the NRR and Neeraj finished off the game stylishly when he well left a wide ball!
Men of the match: Sanjeewa and Raj but the day belonged to the 5 core bowlers, none went wicketless and 4 of them having identical statistics! DCC NRR should be +2.65.
DCC also had the opportunity to chit-chat with some of the other Richmond team members, PCC and GRCC, who had assembled to enjoy the Sat.
DCC guys were hungry after the match and gored some Pizza and celebrated the first ever season winning start by the team. But bigger challenge lies ahead in 1 weeks time. Who would deliver against HPCC? Stay tuned.
Umpire Report PCC umpires, Mani and Pramod, did a clean job and were spot on accurate on their decisions. |
