Match Report Having started the season with 2 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw and no victories at home, DCC were keen to win their first game at Shiloh.
Ketan, ANZACs captain, called tails and won the toss. He had no hesitation in batting. DCC would have probably done the same had they won the toss. The lost toss would turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
Niranjan and Rahul opened the bowling and both were on the money right away. Rahul got into a good rhythm in his second over and the extra pace beat Jitendra Lal to trap him LBW. Niranjan after complaining that the ball was not swinging bowled his two best balls of the season. The first hit the seam, bounced sharply and beat the batsman who could only poke at it. The second was even better. It came in with the angle, pitched on middle then went off the seam to beat the bat and kiss the off stump. The bail dropped and the batsman could not believe what had just happened. ANZACs tried to be patient and wait for the ball to stop swinging. However the next wicket fell to some smart thinking by Niranjan. He lulled Bakul into pushing at a ball when he had not reached the pitch and pushed back a straightforward return catch to Niranjan. Ivan came into the attack and bowled a disciplined first over for a maiden. In his second he hit his straps and got some steep bounce. Vishwanath tried to leave the ball but was late and edged it downwards only for Sanjeewa to dive and take a stunner. Fantastic catch to complement some sharp bowling.
Trip joined Ivan and got into a good groove right away. He tempted Sunil into playing across the line and struck him on the pads. Ivan bowled another beautiful ball and had Anirudh hanging his bat out to guide a gentle catch to Rahul at first slip. Ravi, not wanting to miss the party joined in with two wickets in one over -- the first was a caught behind for Sanjeewa and the second a fast straight one that rearranged the stumps. Trip got Sarvesh poking at one outside the off stump and Sanjeewa caught another sharp chance to leave ANZACs 9 down. Rahul came back to get the last wicket and even up the stats -- Each bowler got two wickets. ANZACs ended up on 95 all out in 26.1 overs.
The second session resumed after a 10 minute break and there was action right away. The first two balls resulted in 2 dropped chances. The batsmen made the most of the lives and got stuck into some wayward bowling. Short balls were pulled dismissively. Length balls were punched and half volleys were dispatched with sweet timing. The runs just flowed with the progression being 13 after the 1st over. 25 after the second. 35 after the third. The fifty was up in the fourth. Mahesh mistimed a pull and skied one to end his cameo at 26 with 6 4s.
ANZACs got into a huddle to try and mount a comeback. It was not be. Ivan walked out and nonchalantly whipped the first ball he faced over midwicket for a rocket 6. He continued the carnage hitting 2 fours and 2 more sixes. Sanjeewa at the other end looked like he was continuing from his unbeaten 100 in the last game and the two finished off the chase in 7.4 overs. Ivan slamming the winning runs with his 3rd six over square leg. He finished on 28 n.o. off 10 balls.
DCC notched its first win at home in style. Good disciplined bowling and catching and some clean crisp batting. The win also provided a much needed boost to the run rate.
