Match Report
It was the first game of the season for Tidewater Cricket Club, and it was against a good team from Richmond, OCC. As the last season didn`t really go as well as expected, there were a lot of expectations as well as nerves coming into this game. On a beautiful, sunny and humid morning of 18th April 2009, we stepped out onto the ground resolute and willing to prove a point, and to start things off on the right track. The event of the game was foreshadowed by the sudden and unfortunate demise of Mr. Frank, a well-loved fellow cricketer and an excellent human being from UICC and the skippers from both the sides initiated the observance of a minutes` silence in memoriam. TWCC had done some digging during the off-season, and had added some new players to their roster to add some firepower to go along with the experience. So, the eyes were also on the new players to see how they blend into the team.

TWCC captain and veteran Anthony Sahadeo won the toss and decided to bat first. As time would tell, this was a really good toss to win. As it was the first game of the season, both the teams were a bit rusty to start off with. But Anthony and his opening partner Arjun picked up their pace quite quickly, and started to dominate the bowling within the first 10 overs. An unfortunate run-out of Arjun was followed by a couple of quick wickets, and suddenly within the 20th over we were staring at a dreaded middle-order collapse. But thankfully Anthony continued his good work and went on to score 57 runs, with the ever – dependable Sanjay and Harry taking the attack to the bowlers in the later stages of the innings. Harry played really well for his 46 runs, and rotated the strike excellently along with Sanjay. But in spite of their heroics, we were all-out for 199, with 5 overs still left to bat and Sanjay stranded just short of a half – century.

It was by no means a good total keeping in mind the depth in out line-up, but we knew that it was a defendable score if we bowled really well and got lucky. But we didn`t get lucky to start off with, and we weren`t good either. Our bowlers had a hard time trying to measure their run-ups, and as a result we gave away way too many extras and bad deliveries. This was the bit of confidence that the OCC opening pair needed, and after a while they started to see the ball really well. Their veteran opening batsman Tanmay was connecting the ball pretty well, and by the time we went into the drinks break, they had already scored 100 runs without loss, and were looking at an easy victory.

Although we were down and frustrated, we never lost hope. We knew that all we needed was to bowl the basics, and get that first wicket. And sure enough, the coveted breakthrough came via Mahesh, the veteran fast-bowler. His variation seemed to do the trick, and we were really pumped up to see Tanmay leave. We all know what happens so often in Cricket when a wicket goes down – another one follows. So OCC ended up losing both their openers in the space of deliveries, and the new batsmen were really uncomfortable against the rejuvenated Mahesh and Kenny. We were sensing a massive change in momentum, and the fielders and bowlers alike started to support each other to keep the pressure on. Mahesh had started to run through their middle order, and the batsmen were confused, startled and feeling the heat. Sanjay, Afuwwan, Kenny and Rajesh supported Mahesh really well, and from an improbable situation TWCC had finally wrapped up OCC`s innings for 184 runs, 16 runs short of the winning total. Mahesh had gotten his first five-for of the season, and Afuwwan and Sanjay chipped in with a couple of wickets each.

It was not TWCC`s best performance, but winning the match from that really tight situation felt good.
