Report:
DCC traveled for 2.5 hours to Reedy Creek from Durham. DCC boys,
having gotten conditioned to a flawless pitch at home, were a little bit
surprised to see the half flicx pitch and a wet runup. But CCCC quickly patched
up the ground and the umpires from SCCA assured that the surface would be as
good as any other pitch and the game got underway.
CCCC won the toss and chose to bat first on a damp morning. DCC bowlers, Raj and
Hari, started off brilliantly with accurate line and length. Numerous times the
ball kissed the the opening bats (Syed and Siddarth) only to go wide or short of
the slips. CCCC openers sensed the quality of the bowling and decided to drop
anchor till the shine perished. But the breakthrough was not far away and Syed
edged a great seam from Raj to get caught behind. Siddarth was looking to settle
down but mis-estimated a run to mid-on where Mahesh swooped the ball and made a
direct hit at the bowlers end to account for the 2nd wicket.
Mahesh and Pratik bowled the set of changes and forced Sarat and Yashpal to play
defensively with stinging pace. The fall of wickets were on the batsman's mid to
begin with but soon opened up and were going after the bowling and punished any
erred balls. The fielding standard, already set high by Mahesh, was tested again
by Sarat who took off for a non-existant single. Shankar from point grabbed the
ball and was planning to go for a direct hit when he saw Pratik rush back to the
stumps off his own bowling to eventually make a relay run-out. Presence of mind
earned another wicket for DCC.
Yashpal and Bharat took charge of the batting yet again and in no time CCCC had
raced to 93 at the half way point and the balance was swinging to CCCC.
At 117/9 in the 23rd over, the writing was on the wall for CCCC. What happened
afterwards was stunning. Rohit and Jerry, the last pair, fended off DCC top
bowlers who ran out of quota. One drop catch ensured that CCCC would continue
further and ended with 178/all out.
DCC openers, Asutosh and Shankar, had to make sure that the momentum did not
swing any more towards CCCC favor. Milind opened well for CCCC and the openers
saw the first 2 overs to read the bowling. The pair looked very comfortable at
the crease. Extras and singles were keeping the score board moving for DCC.
Shankar opened up his shoulders shortly and capitalized fully on full-tosses and
over-pitched balls.
Ashutosh at the other end was no different. He cracked all hittable balls.
Wayne, bowling after 7 years, chose the wrong time to bowl to Shankar who
already looked set. Shankar whipped 2 sixers and a boundary over the leg-side.
A wicket at this point could have turned the tilting table more towards CCCC.
Pratik and Mahesh realized this and played very sensibly. Both players were
simply brutal to anything bad. One cracking six over square leg by Pratik took
the score over 100 in the 20th over. Mahesh spanked 2 more over mid-wicket ropes
and it was quite a sight to watch these players plunder any bad balls. CCCC had
to withstand the blistering heat as well as the red hot batsmen.
Finally Mahesh (30 of 47) perished at 157 in the 25th over to be bowled off Dev.
DCC pavilion looked a little anxious. New bat Komal showed rust but remained
calm and prepared not to throw-it away. From 24 needed of 30 balls, it came to
17 needed of the last 3 overs with subdued batting. Pratik's patience was well
rewarded in just 2 balls. One short ball was murdered over backward square leg
for a 6. It was Tendulkarisque.
Although DCC controlled most of the game time, overall it was a very well fought
game by the 2 sides. Matt and Blessington were the umpires from SCCA who
withstood the heat for a job well done. DCC would like to thank their 12th and
13th (Dharmesh and Pradeep) for their enthusiasm and time.
