Report:
Khanna's hatrick puts BCC in a spin. GRCC wins by 7 wickets
The game started off a little late than usual. But it was really worth the wait
to ensure that the neutral umpires from NCSU made it here. We must appreciate
their effort and the competent umpiring display that ensured an incident free
game. BCC won the toss and elected to bat on what was a wonderful day to play
cricket. GRCC opened their bowling attack with Sircar and Bala. With no hint of
any swing, sircar just stuck to a good line and length, not
allowing free rein to the batsmen. Bala on the other hand took some time finding
his line and the BCC openers were going at a good clip. The first BCC wicket
fell early when Vishal, trying to glance sircar found a diving vicky (I) at
short square leg pulling off the first of his three brilliant catches. That
turned out to be the only success for the GRCC bowlers (Sircar, Menon and Bala)
for a while as Bhavesh and Venkat dropped anchor and played some sensible
cricket.
The introduction of Vicky(1 again) into the attack got GRCC the
much required wicket of Bhavesh when he failed to clear the boundaray at mid
wicket; Hari holding on to a very good catch. BCC still were cruising along at
over 5 an over with wickets in hand, and Venkat and Vijay looking to post a
winning total. Rajeev Khanna however had other plans. His slow bowling with
subtle variations in length completely bemused the BCC batsmen who,
instead of consolidating, went after him. The result: 6 wickets in 5.2 overs
with a hatrick for khanna, that included the wickets of Vijay (caught by Vicky I
at long on), Venkat, off the very next ball (caught by Vicky II, at midwicket:
an excellent balancing act on the ropes) and in the very first ball of his next
over, Girish (lbw after playing all over a shorter one). BCC never recovered
from this triple blow as all the lower order batsmen, save Dan briefly, followed
their top order mates and rounded up for 112 with Ramesh, Hari, Khanna sharing
the spoils. At the end of the first session, GRCC were left with 112 to get at a
little less than 4 an over, not a very tough ask; not an easy one either given
the bowling depth of BCC.
GRCC, realizing that BCC would come all out in defending the modest target,
began cautiously with Ramesh and Sravan just looking to see off Vishal and Dan,
who were generating decent pace off the wicket. After an
intial flurry of wides, the runs became hard to come by for GRCC. Sravan, who
was middling the ball well was unlucky to miss out on a delivery bowled at his
pads and was declared lbw. Vicky II joined Ramesh and the two got the score to
56 around the half way mark. BCC were still bowling well and GRCC continued to
be content in playing the waiting game. Ramesh and Vicky II kept the runs coming
at a decent rate until Ramesh, trying to force the issue, holed out to extra
cover; Venkat taking a good running catch.
Vicky II, also in a rare rush of blood holed out to square leg trying to force
the pace. However, Hari played some attacking strokes from the other end to
hasten the end of the game with Sastry scoring the winning runs off the first
ball of the 27th over to give GRCC a well deserved victory by 7 wickets.
A very special thank you to Anirudh,Vishwas, Rupali ... from NCSU for driving
all the way from Raleigh to umpire this game. Their conduct was highly
professional and it is a credit to their skills that the game went off without a
hitch.
Man of the Match: Rajeev Khanna (6 wickets for 26 runs
with a hatrick)
